Press Release

June 13, 2016 (Pleasanton, CA)—Pleasanton Unified School Board Trustee Valerie Arkin today announced her candidacy for a third term on the school board. Arkin was first elected to the board in November 2008 on a platform of supporting the highest quality academic programs for students, and transparency about school issues for residents and parents.

“As a parent of three children who went through Pleasanton’s public school system, and as a long- time school volunteer, I understand the need to keep parents completely informed about decisions that will affect their children and that are being conducted using taxpayer money. During my two terms on the board, I am very proud of the great progress that we have made in improving the communications conduit between the district and the community,” said Arkin. “It is still a work in progress, but I will always continue to lobby for greater advances in the arena of communication.”

High academic achievement is a priority for Arkin. “I will continue working to ensure that Pleasanton students have the programs that address their academic needs, as well as addressing their extra-curricular needs. I believe that our students should graduate with the skills they need to succeed in a global economy and prepared to be socially responsible citizens”, said Arkin.

Fiscal responsibility is another target area for Arkin, who is cognizant of the hundreds of budget decisions related to the operation of a large school district. Among the many other contributions Arkin has made during her tenure have been the implementation of student board members to better understand the student perspective in board decisions, an update of district policies, initiating more reading intervention programs, having a member of the public serve on the audit committee, and an evaluation of the district’s legal services.

“I wholeheartedly endorse Valerie Arkin for re-election to the Pleasanton school board. Valerie works to ensure that all students have the resources they need in order to reach their maximum potential,” says Congressman Eric Swalwell, who represents the 15th District of California. “Valerie is honest, respectful, and objective and she encourages stakeholder input in order to make informed decisions. Valerie’s vision, leadership, and dedication make her an ideal person to continue representing the community on the school board. Please join me in supporting Valerie Arkin for re- election,” adds Congressman Swalwell.

As a school board trustee, Arkin also serves on the Special Education Local Plan Area Board and the City of Pleasanton Liaison Committee. She served as school board president in 2011 and 2015 and is a delegate for the California School Board Association. She has also served two terms on the Pleasanton Library Commission and is a past member of the Board of Managers for the Tri-Valley YMCA.

Arkin is a 23-year resident of Pleasanton and lives in the city with her husband Brian. She has three children including Chris, age 24, who is a college grad working in the tech industry, college senior Angela, age 21, and Nick, who is a junior at Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton.

Arkin holds a bachelor’s degree in Health Science from California State University Northridge, and an MBA from California Lutheran University. She also completed the Governance Training program of the California School Boards Association.
